Estonian sustainability startup Green Deal, part of the Skovest Network, has initiated a forestry revolution by developing a new methodology for more effective carbon sequestration. This innovative approach enhances the potential of forests to capture carbon, contributing to global climate goals and improving ecosystem balance. The first Carbon Parks managed according to this methodology will be established in Central Estonia.
The EU has set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and to plant 3 billion additional trees. The Carbon Reserve developed by the Green Deal supports this goal. The first Carbon Parks in the Carbon Reserve will be planted this year on April 27th, with over 10,000 plants across more than five hectares.
In the first phase, three Carbon Parks will be established. The world’s first named Carbon Parks will be owned by Skovest Network companies Eesti Metsameister from Estonia and Privatais Mežs from Latvia. The third park to be established is a community park (Green Deal Carbon Park), open for contributions from everyone (https://www.carbonreserve.earth/). The creation of these parks demonstrates the initiative of hundreds of people towards achieving global climate goals.

Green Deal’s innovative methodology was developed in collaboration with the University of Life Sciences, the Root Ecology Group of the Geography Department at the University of Tartu, Tallinn University, and other scientists. The methodology and parks not only support environmental conservation but also create new research opportunities, bringing together specialists and companies from various fields to work towards a common goal.
