The agreement, adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection, establishes a comprehensive set of new binding standards. On the one hand, on aircraft fuel efficiency, which will enter into force on 31 December 2031, and on the other hand, on noise levels for new aircraft, which will be implemented from 1 January 2029. Formal adoption is expected at a forthcoming session of the ICAO Council.
Commercial aircraft applying for certification after these dates will have to meet new global standards, which will require significant improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction.
New aircraft will need to reduce their fuel consumption by at least 10% compared to existing models.
In addition, from 2029, future aircraft will need to be at least 6 decibels quieter. This represents a significant improvement in noise reduction, with noise levels expected to fall by more than 30% compared to current models.
While achieving simultaneous progress on fuel efficiency and noise reduction is a technological challenge, this new ICAO dual standard encourages innovation to achieve both goals, striking a crucial balance between environmental sustainability and community well-being.
