Watch: Sir Elton John’s “farewell” Glastonbury show was the most watched in its 53 years’ history

Sir Elton John’s “farewell” Glastonbury show was the most watched headline act in the venue’s history.

More than 7.5 million people tuned into the BBC’s coverage of his “last ever tour”.

And more than 120,000 people were in the audience at the Somerset farm.

The viewing figures were nearly twice the number set for Ed Sheeran in 2007.

Digging into a rich back catalogue, Sir Elton, 76, played hit after hit after hit.

He started with Pinball Wizard and closed with Rocket Man.

He said on stage:

“Thank you for 52 years of amazing love and loyalty.

“I never thought I would ever play Glastonbury, and here I am.

“It’s a very special and emotional night for me.”

Afterwards, he wrote on Instagram:

“Thank you, Glastonbury!

“The energy last night was like nothing else, and I couldn’t be more grateful to the crowd and the people watching at home for all your love and support.

“You will be in my heart and soul forever. UK, what a farewell. I love you.”

Altogether, 21.6 million people watched the BBC’s Glastonbury coverage over the weekend, up seven per cent on the previous year.

Lorna Clarke, the broadcaster’s director of music, said:

“Elton John’s set will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most epic performances ever to light up the Pyramid Stage.

“It was watched by a record 7.6 million people on BBC One.

“I’m so delighted the BBC and our superb teams were able to share every bit of the magic from Worthy Farm during the weekend with audiences at home.”
