International Plain Language Day: Making Commission texts clearer

Good communication starts with making information clear and easy to understand. This is the aim of plain language – also known at the Commission as clear language. It helps readers find the information they need and understand it without unnecessary complexity.

At the European Commission, DG Translation editors support colleagues in writing clear and accessible texts in English. They work with authors to improve the structure and wording of texts, make the main message easier to find and reduce unnecessary jargon.

We also provide clear language training to staff and work with clear language contacts across the Commission and other EU institutions to share good practices.

Our 10 principles for clear language bring together some of the main points to consider when you are writing or revising a text.

Clear language also plays a role in building trust in public information. This will be one of the topics discussed at the 2026 Translating Europe Forum. A clear language session will explore clarity, accuracy and trust in a climate of misinformation.

DG Translation has also developed two free AI-based tools to help make texts clearer. WebText rewrites web content using simple vocabulary and web-friendly formatting, while Accessible Text applies easy-to-read guidelines to make texts more accessible. These tools are open to public administrations, small businesses (including self-employed people), academia, non-governmental organisations, Digital Europe projects, and candidates for EU posts.
